WATTUSI – A Musical Journey beyond Borders

WATTUSI is the musical journey of brothers Octavio and Bernardo Torija, born in Mexico and shaped by life across different continents. Always in search of traditional and acoustic sounds, they craft their music using a mix of live instruments (some even self made) synthesizers, and electronic elements, recording everything from scratch in their studio. This hands-on approach gives their sound a unique and organic character that stands out in electronic music.

Honoring Tradition and Embracing the Scene

Since childhood, music has been central to their lives—exploring their father’s guitar, collecting music and absorbing the rich sounds of Mexico’s folk traditions. Over time, they delved into Son Huasteco, Son Jarocho, and Cumbia Sonidera, alongside global influences like Reggae, Ska, and avant-garde electronic music.

Back in Mexico, they reconnected deeply with their roots, studying Son Jarocho, the Nahuatl language, and traditional Jarana-making, a craft for creating Mexico’s iconic wooden string instruments. At the same time, they threw themselves into the local music scene, often bringing their own heavy sound system and a car full of instruments to venues.

They co-founded TIMONEKI, a project blending Mexican folk with modern sounds, which quickly gained traction. They recorded a couple of EPs (available on Bandcamp) and continued exploring new musical territories.

A New Chapter: Portugal and Cosmic Tropical Records

After years of exploring different musical paths—Octavio in Canada and Bernardo in Spain—the brothers reunited in Portugal, blending their diverse influences into a fresh creative vision. There, Bernardo discovered ecstatic dance and cacao ceremonies, aligning perfectly with his passion for music and spirituality. Their reunion sparked the birth of Cosmic Tropical Records—a label and event series dedicated to uniting people through organic and electronic music.

Under the Cosmic Tropical Records umbrella, WATTUSI has curated events like YALLA YALLA, Earth Night, Mexican Nights, and Cosmic Tropical Sessions, collaborating with artists such as Kurup, Boje, Ben & Vincent, Orkidz, Orka, Lotte Walda, Carla Valenti, Bial Hclap, NoN Project, among others.

A Sound Like No Other

WATTUSI’s music is alive. They build each track from the ground up, playing live instruments—including a few self-made ones—alongside synthesizers, drum machines, and organic textures. This hands-on approach results in a distinct, warm, and immersive sound that sets them apart in electronic music.

Releases

They have released music on some of the most respected organic house labels, including WAYU Records ("Mar" EP), Cosmic Awakenings (a Persian-inspired track), and Café de Anatolia. Their "Dragonfly" EP, a collaboration with Dutch artist Lotte Walda, blends ethereal vocals with evolving soundscapes. With exciting new projects on the horizon, WATTUSI continues to explore and evolve their sound.

Versatile Performers for Any Stage

As sound explorers and dance music lovers, WATTUSI adapts effortlessly to different atmospheres—shifting between sound journeys, live downtempo sets, and high-energy hybrid DJ performances. From holistic gatherings and sunset sessions to club nights and festivals, they bring an immersive energy tailored to each venue.

Their passion for vinyl remains strong, delivering strictly vinyl DJ sets that span cumbia, salsa, Latin-Afro rhythms, world music, and electronic-infused sounds—sometimes reaching into IDM, depending on the crowd.

With their unique blend of live instrumentation, electronic innovation, and deep-rooted Latin influences, WATTUSI continues to captivate audiences worldwide—bringing music to life in ways that transcend borders.
